A Bet Between Stormtroopers

It's an obscure point, but there's been some argument over there years about Lando's rescue of Luke from underneath Cloud City on Bespin. An exterior shot of the Falcon does show Lando coming up from the circular hatch pictured above, but the scale is off. Though the Millennium Falcon is no stranger to mismatched scale (such as the interior not fitting the exterior), so in the end, it's just a bit of movie magic.

  1. If the Falcon was scaled to the UberHatch 9000 though, how big would it be? Would we count it as the outer edge of the pit or the hatch itself?

  2. big, damned big. But that could also be pretty arbitrary scaling. For my purposes, I'm only interested in the scale of the exterior movie set. Solving the ship of riddles means too many sacrifices.

  3. What i didn't like was in the special edition of The Empire Strikes Back, instead of one upper hatch Lando was going up to we now had tow hatches. Explain That.

  4. Does this set piece appear any where on the Falcon?

  5. The Exterior Hatch shot of Lando, the surrounding detail is on the other side where the ramp is.

  6. Though the cutaway itself is totally inaccurate, it is convincing that the surrounding detail indicates the starboard side. It would be quite a challenge to put that elevator on the boarding ramp even if it can be shifted to the side when not in use.
