The Star Wars (1955)

Recently I've been poking at a fun mash-up side project.

So it's well documented that George Lucas had originally wanted to recreate Flash Gordon, but couldn't obtain the rights and so made Star Wars instead. My project imagines that Star Wars was actually a vintage show, which would have aired sometime in the 50s alongside Flash Gordon, and that it was this show that Lucas obtained the rights to and rebooted in 1977.

Here are a few of the props I've designed so far...

The Falcon

Star Destroyer

A Stormtrooper Bucket

and finally, R2-D2

McQuarrie Falcon, by Jason Eaton

In 2013, I designed a model of the Millennium Falcon, based on early concept drawings and paintings by Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston.

(Johnston)

(McQuarrie)

(mine)

following that post, an acquaintance from the Replica Prop Forum, the seriously talented Jason Eaton, contacted me about purchasing the model with a view to creating a physical model.

Well, he's just finished it up. And I have to say, this 32" beauty goes beyond my wildest dreams!

He's posted some stunning photos of the model here:

Solomobile

So there's an upcoming Young Han Solo movie in the works, if you haven't heard. I started out feeling pretty skeptical of the whole idea, but I'm starting to come around. Basically as soon as they announced that Donald Glover would play young Calrissian....

Now there's been some set photos of Han driving a custom speeder in some kind of chase/dragracing scene. details on the Star Wars News Net here

So I built this model of the speeder just to check it out up close.

I love/hate this design. It reminds me of the 60s batmobile for some reason, and has some charming details, but that asymmetrical spoiler is ... blegh. Might look great in action though, only time will tell...
