Bigger on the inside... sorta

It's often said of the Millennium Falcon that the interior set wouldn't actually fit the exterior set used for filming. A lot has been written on the subject, but here's an illustration of just how badly the two sets fit together.

Essentially the ramp is the only place where the two sets can agree. After that point all hell breaks loose...

well here's a fine how-do-you-do...

  1. Movie magic! What are your thoughts on where the Last Jedi escape pod room fits in?

  2. I'm going to wait until I can watch the scene frame-by-frame. I do know that the TFA set had a few more corridors than the sets in the original movies. Specifically there's a T-junction at the end of the corridor if you were to turn left after coming up the ramp. Never seen in the movie, but it's there in behind-the-scenes materials, and in blueprints found in the Art of Force Awakens. I'm curious if they filmed the escape pod scene in that part of the set on Last Jedi, but it remains to be seen!

    1. I'm pretty sure they just had Chewie stand in from of the ladder well and looking into the corridor leading up to the flight deck for Rey's perspective. But you can't see the ladder well so it could pass for the rear-most portion of the central ring corridor.

    1. Good ol' Rob Brown. I still remember the horror stories he told of his experiences as an extra in Episode II.

Long story short: Nick Gilliard is an absolute hack, and LucasFilm could be EXTREMELY petty and vindictive.

  6. That seems to confirm what I thought. There is a widely spread misconception that the full scale Falcons (ANH & ESB) where built at 80% scale for budgetary and practical reasons, and so it's cockpits were too small compare to the cockpit inside set. I think people confused with the fact that ILM built only 80% of the ship for ANH, meaning they did not built part the port hull, not that they scaled down the ship.
Could you make another image matching the cockpits? I'd like to see what it looks like. :)

    1. It's closer than I thought but the cockpits are definitely a lot different, in the repair scenes in ESB you can see chewie barley squeezing in the exterior set cockpit.

    2. I really don't think they are any different. I suppose the impression we have of Chewie in the scene you talk about compared to the usual inside shots of the cockpit is due to the camera angle, being outside, with the canopy, etc

  8. is a subject that many people have an opinion about, but the phrase is also abused. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is characterized by consistent obsessions, accompanied by compulsions that disrupt a person’s ability to handle everyday life. When you exhibit an obsessive personality you are constantly having unpleasant or disturbing thoughts, and/or impulses that plague your mind even when you try your best to eliminate them.

  9. I solved the riddle. It's simple. When we are in corridor of boarding ramp, just hide falcon body model and show interior model. I'll upload a gif with that "magic" soon :)

  11. You're late by about 20 years. Rob Brown (one of the main Star Wars tech guys alongside Dr. Curtis Saxton back in the late-90s. The one LucasFilm absolutely HATED and had an actual personal vendetta against) did this back before the Prequels came out.
